The Nyanga township condemned the alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl by ten suspects from the same area three of whom are still at large. The Civic organisation said that the ordeal that the homicidal maniacs have put the teenager through has caused her physical, deep emotional and psychological trauma might take a lifetime to heal.
“We commend police for the swift arrest of seven of the 10 suspects and call on the Nyanga community to assist trace the remaining three responsible for the ghastly and despicable crime that has robbed the little girl of her innocence,” said SANCO National Spokesperson, Jabu Mahlangu appealing for united action to stamp the scourge of rape and gender based violence. Mahlangu called for no bail and harsh sentences against the alleged perpetrators. “Girl children and women can assist the objective for safer communities over the festive season by avoiding to walk alone in isolated spots and going out with strangers particularly at night,” he stressed. He urged parents to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of children particular during the December holidays after closure of schools. “Knowing the whereabouts of children and the company that they are keeping will reduce risks of such horrendous acts and other opportunistic crime,” Mahlangu underscored.
The young victim was reportedly abducted at gunpoint and allegedly raped. She was able to identify her attackers, aged between 18 and 20 years old who allegedly raped her at three locations.
