Inter-governmental Relations statement released

In efforts to enhance good working relations and uphold the spirit of Inter-governmental Relations, the Executive Mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality Cllr Jostina Mothibe on Thursday invited representatives of sector government departments that are based in Madibeng to a meeting.


The Executive Mayor was joined by Speaker of Council, Clr Kabelo Ntshabele, Municipal Public Accounts Committee Chairperson, Cllr Diale Diale, members of her Mayoral Committee, Acting Municipal Manager, Energy Manaka and Directors. In addressing the attendees, the Executive Mayor emphasised the need for the municipality and the departments to stand together and intergrate into the communities.

She said: “As a new administration we want to ensure that we start our term on the right footing by prioritising issues of inter-governmental relations. We are here today to engage on issues of development in our municipality, note where we share common objectives and most importantly to give inputs that will result in us achieving our common goal of bettering the lives of our people. The Executive Mayor added that the municipality is mandated by law to involve other spheres of government in finding the best solutions that will assist in achieving long-term development.She continued: “The establishment and maintenance of relations between all spheres of government is a legislative requirement in terms of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996. Chapter 3 (Principles of co-operative and inter-governmental relations), implores us to co-operate with one another and by good faith by doing the following: Fostering friendly relations, Assisting and supporting one another, Informing one another of, and consulting one another on matters of common interest, Co-ordinating our actions and legislation with one another, Adhering to agreed procedures and avoiding legal actions against each other. The Acting Municipal Manager Energy Manaka, presented a progress report on the First 100 Days of the Executive Mayor in Office which included among others, programmes roads and storm water (construction of roads, regravelling, patching of potholes), Stakeholder engagements with business and communities structures and traditional authorities, renovations of community halls, revenue enhancement, horticultural maintenance (in Brits, Elandsrand, Primindia, Hartbeespoort) issuing of title deeds, SMME Support, electrification of outstanding areas.

The Executive Mayor made a commitment that the municipality will deliver all programmes as planned without failling.  “There will be no excuses, we will call a Press Briefing at the end of this programme to give feed back,” she said
