South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North-West Province on Thursday condemned destruction of public properties following the torching of three schools and a clinic in Kopela near Delarayville.
“Communities should not allow anarchists and criminal elements to hijack their genuine service delivery concerns and misdirect them towards criminality, disruption of schooling and destruction of public infrastructure, “SANCO Provincial Chairperson, Paul Sebegoe said in appealing for calm.
Sebegoe called on authorities to intensify public participation programmes and consultations to address service delivery needs and challenges facing communities.
“A high-flown hype instead of regular, meaningful consultation and engagements at ward level will not assist to address simmering discontent and accelerate service delivery,”he warned.
Ten classrooms, an administration block, two school libraries, teachers staffrooms and a school feeding scheme kitchen were reportedly burnt to the ground at Noto, Kelebogile Primary School and Ramokonyane Middle School on Wednesday.
Valuable information including learner results, four photo-copying machines and two printers were damaged and schools records lost in the fire.
